Student collecting toys for hospital

The Smile Wagon is collecting toys for the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital in Lexington again.

Logan Lands, a student at Mason County Intermediate School, has been collecting toys for the hospital for a few years. This year, he is trying to reach a goal of 1,000 toys.

Lands said he came up with the idea to collect the toys when he was in the first grade at Straub Elementary School.

“I came up the idea to collect wagons and toys for the hospital the summer before I started first grade,” he said. “With the help of my first grade class and teacher Mrs. Kidd, we made a plan on how to get the donation drive started. Together we donated 525 toys that year. The next year, I decided to continue the toys drive on my own with the help of my family and we were able to deliver 728 toys.”

According to Cindy Lands, Logan Lands' mother, the toys will be accepted until Dec. 19.

“Toys can be dropped of at Straub, MCIS, The AT&T store in the Kroger Plaza and the Cutting edge salon and spa in Morehead,” she said. “If someone can not drop the toys off, they can contact us through our Facebook page (The Smile Wagon) to arrange pickup.”

A wish list of toys can be found on The Smile Wagon’s Facebook page. Some of the items listed on it include dolls, non-violent action figures, play-doh, puzzles, V-tech toys, journals, jewelry, Nerf ball sets, crayons, markers, sports items, craft sets, card games, board games, tea sets and many other items.

The family is also collecting red wagons for the hospital.

Logan Lands said he is excited to collect the toys again.

“I am excited to continue The Smile Wagon because I like helping the children at the hospital,” he said. “Being in the hospital must be really hard and I hope that the toys and wagons we donate can help make them smile. I feel it is important to give during this time of year because Christmas is about giving gifts not getting gifts. I decided to continue the smile wagon again this year because I want to continue to give. My Mom and Dad have always taught me about how important it is to give to others.”

Cindy Lands said she appreciates the help of everyone in the community who makes it possible to collect the items each year.

“We would like to thank the community for supporting this effort over the last few years. Without a loving a giving community this drive would not be possible,” she said.
